Those of you who know me or really follow me on Twitter know that while makeup is a passion of mine, music is my soul. Music is one of the few things that can completely alter my mood. When I’m having a bad day, I turn to music… I’m one of those annoying people who incessantly posts music on Facebook even though most people don’t give a shit. I’ve contemplated posting about music here and there but my “makeup life” and my “music life” don’t usually mesh well. Then, I literally just said to myself “fuck it”… My blog has always been a combination of my honest views on beauty products, an expression of my art and sometimes my opinions on life in general so why not share with you guys one of the most important things in my life. If you don’t like it then skip these posts… Trust me, it doesn’t hurt my feelings in the least bit.
I often get the question “what kind of music do you like?” and I never know how to answer this question. Honestly, when it comes to the opposite sex I will sometimes avoid that question because music IS so important to me that it becomes a dealbreaker. My iTunes is an eclectic, interesting mesh of music with the majority of it being Hip Hop, Soul and instrumentals. The genre of Hip Hop itself has so many subgenres so it’s gets a little messy when I “talk Hip Hop” with somebody. I won’t go into details of what types of Hip Hop I like here because I will surely bore you with a 12 page post. I will just show you through my future posts instead… Honestly, I’m having a hard time explaining what I listen to as I’m writing because a lot of it can’t be placed into a genre anyway. Point is, I have a fetish… A fetish for a delicious beat, downtempo sexy rhythms and mean wordplay. Music is very personal. You like it or you don’t but the most beautiful part of music is being able to share it with people…. If just one person finds a song they can’t stop listening to because of one of my posts then I’ve done my part.
I’m going to start off with one of my favorite sexed up, soulful mixes that I listen to all the time. Krave Deez has become a huge resource for me and he always keeps me laced with amazing music. Check out his Bedside Manner mix which I think is a perfect introduction for the newer soul listener as well as satisfying the sophisticated ear. He features Andreya Triana, Floetry, M.I.A., Vikter Duplaix, Miguel, Freddie Joachim and then some. Two words. Panty dropper.
The next mixtape by Rod Roc satisfies my taste for fresh beats by some of my favorite beatmakers and producers including Teeko, Chief, Eric Lau, Full Crate & more. I “met” Rod Roc oddly enough through Twitter and Instagram where we quickly discovered our similar taste in music. I didn’t realize he had such an extensive resume until he asked me to drop a quick shout on his newest mixtape Brainwork. I was being a big dweeb & was nervous about recording a 5 sec blurb but I’m glad I got to be a part of this piece somehow.
The next artist I want to mention is B.O.E., Barz Over Everything. His passion for hip hop and life itself is so inspiring. I’m a firm believer that talent is a huge part of the equation BUT not all of it. Drive, tenacity, passion, ambition and pure desire make up the rest of it. I can’t tell you how excited I am for the release of his mixtape on June 1st. I was lucky enough to hear a track from the album before it’s release and I absolutely LOVED it. It’s the backpack style of hip hop that’s chock-full of wordplay that I can never get enough of. You guys can check out the trailer for the mixtape here.
Last but definitely not least I wanted to talk about Ebrahim and his latest album with one of my favorite producer/beatmakers Häzel. I discovered Ebrahim while I was completely sucked into Häzel’s Soundcloud page one day. I came across the song “This Is Dope” and I was completely in awe of both of them as a team.
Ebrahim and Häzel teamed up on an amazing album, In My Heart I Am, that I would have gladly paid for simply to get the tracks but turns out 100% of the proceeds are going to the Ride To Conquer Cancer. I urge you guys to check this album out if you are in any way a fan of Dilla influenced tracks and good music PERIOD.
Häzel’s new Playgroud EP is also available for purchase on iTunes so be sure to check him out as well.
Artists of all types have always been a huge inspiration for me and I am honored and blessed to have people like this as an influence. You all fucken rock in my book! I appreciate you!!!
